Ground Source Heat Pumps in South River High School

    I am part of a group of 3 students working on a project in South River High School, Edgewater, MD. Our school is part of Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). Our challenge is to cogenerate wind energy coupled with ground source geothermal heat pumps.
    Initially, we were thinking of using ground source heat pumps by drilling to depths of 6-12 feet deep and using horizontal looping to generate energy. However, after learning the school is 300,000 sq. ft., we were directed to use multiple drill lines, each hundreds of feet deep into the ground. A representative of the Geothermal Energy Association advised that we need various engineer, including a Systems Engineer, to approximate the cost of implementing geothermal pumps for space heating.
    Our project is not to totally replace the heating and cooling system in our school, just to supplement it so our carbon footprint is reduced. We are also planning on using small wind turbines on the roof of the school to produce energy.
    Any guidance on how we should use geothermal heat pumps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi and welcome!
    The first question is " What is the tonnage of the load you are hoping to supplement?"
    The second is " what tonnage do you want to cover with the geo?"
    When those two questions are answered, I can help you swag some numbers for the drilling.

    Schools are tricky, since they have minimum ventilation requirements, and you have the problem that students move around. One hour they are all in the auditorium, the next hour they are in the gym. Indeed, we need the peak requirements for each zone, the total peak load for whole school, as well as the annual total load.
