Advice on Replacement Geothermal System

Advice on Replacement Geothermal System

Postby nebraska6 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:51 am

Hello everyone, I was wondering if you could offer me some advice. I want to replace the Carrier Geothermal Heat Pump in my house. It was originally installed in 1984, and it is an open loop system. I have gotten 4 quotes from 4 HVAC companies. Here is info on the 2 best quotes:

Century Brand HP, 2 Ton Geothermal
10kW Backup heat, integrated with HP Unit
18.2 EER, 3.7 COP
Single Speed Blower
Warranty: 5 yrs Compressor, 5 yrs parts, 1 yr labor

ComfortAire HP, 2 Ton Geothermal
Trane, 15kW Backup heat, not integrated with HP Unit
20.6 EER, 3.9 COP
Variable Speed Blower
Warranty: 7 yrs Heating, 5 Heat Pump, 1 yr labor

The price of the quotes is basically identical. I would really like to spave physical space in our basement by using the integrated Century unit. But that unit doesn’t seem to be quite as efficient as the ComfortAire/Trane split system. I did find it curious that both ComfortAire and Century are manufactured by Heat Controller.

Our home is in-town, approx 1950 square feet, and spilt level. The present Carrier HP unit is 2 Ton with 15kW backup. It is a split system (3 peices).

Thanks in advance! I am a newbie, so hopefully I included all the relevent info.

I do have this to add:

The Century system uses the new refriderant (410a?), and the ComfortAire was quoted using R22.
